I’ve never bought a single product or service from Cyril’s Framing Studio at Cammeray. In fact, I’d never heard of them until a few days ago and I don’t even have anything made by them hanging on our walls…. yet.
But I do have seven frames made by them, some 15 years ago, which I have just finished deconstructing. And, let me tell you, age certainly has not fatigued the materials or the craftsmanship which went into the frames. To be frank, it was a shit of a job getting them apart – a mark of a great framing job in the first place.
The frames, and their soon to be discarded images, used to hang in the offices of Southern Star Entertainment many moons ago, showcasing the (then) latest and greatest TV shows and movies they Southern Star was producing/distributing. Cyril’s Framing Studio is located just 5mins away from Southern Star which, I suspect, wouldn’t have hurt their chances for being chosen back in 1996 for the framing job.
While the imagery shown in the frames is looking rather tired, the frames and beautifully-cut mats are in excellent condition. I can’t imagine that these custom frames – the largest being almost 900mm x 1200mm – would have been particularly cheap to have had made and they would be a shame to throw out.
There’s only one problem with them – the frame colour. The rest of our frames downstairs are semi-gloss black, and these are are gloss natural pine finish. It’s nothing that a quick sand and a coat of paint won’t fix…. that is… once I manage to get them disassembled!
